Thundermist Family Medicine Residency
The Thundermist Health Center of Woonsocket Family Medicine Residency, a teaching affiliate of Tufts University School of Medicine, is dedicated to addressing the critical shortage of primary care physicians in Rhode Island, particularly in underserved areas like Woonsocket. Through a highly innovative and integrated training approach, we aim to equip family medicine residents with the skills and knowledge to deliver high-quality primary care while addressing the social determinants of health. With a curriculum that emphasizes cutting-edge medical training and a deep commitment to social justice and health equity, Thundermist prepares residents to make a tangible difference in their communities, ensuring all Rhode Islanders have access to compassionate, comprehensive care.
Our program offers an unparalleled training environment, rooted in an affiliation with Tufts University School of Medicine and major healthcare partners such as Landmark Medical Center and the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. These affiliations provide our residents with rich learning experiences across diverse healthcare settings, from primary care clinics to specialized hospital rotations. Residents will gain hands-on experience managing complex health conditions and caring for populations affected by social health disparities, all while working alongside renowned healthcare professionals. This unique blend of community-focused practice and academic rigor prepares Thundermist residents to excel in all areas of Family Medicine.
The Thundermist Family Medicine Residency is more than just clinical training; it is a pathway to becoming a leader in social medicine. Each resident will complete a Social Medicine curriculum, incorporating topics like substance use disorder management, gender-affirming care, and care for unhoused populations. Residents will also undertake a Community Health Project, identifying and addressing a pressing health need within Woonsocket. Through this project, residents not only gain practical experience in community health but also contribute directly to improving the well-being of local residents. Our commitment to interprofessional collaboration ensures that residents work with community health teams, learning to provide holistic, patient-centered care that addresses both medical and social needs.
Thundermist Health Center is committed to creating a supportive, sustainable residency environment that promotes long-term career fulfillment in community health. Our program emphasizes a balanced work-life approach, providing resources to manage administrative tasks and reduce physician burnout. With added incentives and support for loan repayment, we encourage our residents to remain in Rhode Island post-residency, helping bridge the gap in primary care access. Thundermist’s Family Medicine Residency is an exceptional opportunity for residents eager to make a meaningful impact in high-need communities, becoming the next generation of compassionate, socially conscious healthcare leaders.
