Guidelines for Families with Divorced or Separated Parents

We recognize that family changes such as separation or divorce can be difficult. Our primary focus is always the health and well-being of your child. We will follow all applicable legal requirements and aim to work respectfully with both parents to support coordinated care.

Custody
Custody arrangements are determined by the courts or, in some cases, the Department of Children, Youth, and Families. To ensure our team has accurate information, we request that parents provide us with copies of any court orders or legal documents that outline custody or decision-making authority. Unless there is a documented legal restriction, both parents will have equal access to their child’s medical records and office visits. Without such documentation, we rely on parents to collaborate in the best interests of their child.

Communication
We encourage parents to discuss and agree on significant health decisions before their child’s appointment. Our staff and providers cannot act as intermediaries in parental disagreements. It is the responsibility of the parents to communicate with one another regarding scheduling, insurance, and medical updates. Providers will not contact the non-attending parent after visits, nor will they obtain consent from both parents for routine care, unless legally required. We can only limit communication with a parent if supported by official court or agency documentation.

Billing
Payment, including copays, is due at the time of service by the parent accompanying the child. If one parent has been assigned financial responsibility by court order, it is still the attending parent’s obligation to pay at the visit and then arrange reimbursement directly with the other parent. We can provide receipts upon request.

Disputes

Option 1
Our role is to focus on your child’s health. We cannot act as mediators in parental disputes. If disagreements create challenges during appointments or with ongoing care, we will ask parents to resolve these matters outside of the health center so we can continue to provide care effectively.

Option 2
Our staff and providers are committed to caring for your child. We are not able to take sides or resolve conflicts between parents. When disagreements disrupt visits or interfere with medical decisions, we may need to delay or limit care until parents are able to come to an agreement or provide court direction.
